In 1987 the local planning authority, West Dorset District Council, selected Duchy of Cornwall land to the west of Dorchester for future expansion of the town, His Majesty King Charles, As Duke of Cornwall, The Prince of Wales—who re-examined many precepts of urban and rural planning in his book: A Vision of Britain—took the opportunity to work with the council to create a model urban extension to this ancient market town. There is also a chapter in his book dedicated to the influence of Seaside, Florida.
In 1988, His Majesty King Charles appointed the well-known architect and urban planner, Leon Krier that many who know and love Seaside will recognize. He worked the overall concept of the 400 acres of land now known as Poundbury. Leon Krier built the first house of his career in Seaside, Florida.
The week in Poundbury will include an impeccable lineup of speakers that will celebrate the Ecology of Place, From Understanding to ACTION.
